Same statement, two registers
dont is the unmarked choice for any complement with de. In formal style, though, writers like to replace a plain parler de with a more precise verb and a longer preposition: s'exprimer au sujet de, se prononcer en faveur de, émettre des réserves à l'égard de. That automatically brings in duquel or de laquelle. So the register shifts through word choice, and the relative pronoun follows.
Neutral or formal
With dont
C'est une cause dont il parle souvent.
It's a cause he often talks about.
Voici le projet dont nous avons discuté.
Here's the project we discussed.
With duquel / de laquelle
C'est une cause au sujet de laquelle il s'exprime souvent.
It's a cause on which he often speaks out.
Voici le projet à propos duquel nous avons échangé.
Here's the project about which we exchanged views.
Where dont falls short
With dont you complete a noun that is the subject or direct object: un auteur dont j'admire les romans. But if that noun itself comes after a preposition, dont is ruled out. Then duquel follows the noun directly, and the preposition moves to the front with it.
The pattern
C'est un auteur dont j'admire les romans.
He's an author whose novels I admire.
les romans is the direct object, so dont works.
C'est un auteur aux romans duquel je reviens souvent.
He's an author whose novels I often go back to.
revenir à les romans, hence aux romans duquel.
La société dans les locaux de laquelle nous travaillons a été rachetée.
The company in whose offices we work has been bought out.
Le client avec le fils duquel j'ai fait mes études nous a rappelés.
The client whose son I studied with called us back.
For people, de qui also works, avec le fils de qui.
auquel and à qui
With verbs taking à, there's no choice for things: la réunion à laquelle j'ai assisté. For people, à qui and auquel compete. à qui is neutral; auquel sounds like a letter, a report or an official notice.
People after à
Neutral
Les clients à qui on a écrit n'ont pas répondu.
The clients we wrote to haven't replied.
Formal
Les clients auxquels nous avons adressé ce courrier n'ont pas répondu.
The clients to whom we sent this letter have not replied.
What happens in conversation
In conversation, chains like dans les locaux de laquelle feel heavy. Relaxed speakers usually rebuild the sentence rather than swap the pronoun. Both versions are correct. The first belongs in a text, the second by the coffee machine.
La société dans les locaux de laquelle nous travaillons a été rachetée.
The company in whose offices we work has been bought out.
Written, one sentence.
Tu sais, la boîte où on bosse ? Elle a été rachetée.
You know the company where we work? It's been bought out.
Spoken, broken up.
