B1Pronouns

Reflexive Pronouns: accusative vs dative

I wash myself, but I wash my hands: once a second thing is involved, mich becomes mir.

mich or mir?

A reflexive pronoun is Akkusativ when the person themselves is what gets washed, dressed or hurried: Ich wasche mich. When something else is washed, that something is the Akkusativ object and the reflexive pronoun becomes Dativ: Ich wasche mir die Hände.

A second object arrives

Ich wasche mich.→Ich wasche mir die Hände.

When is the pronoun Dativ?

Body parts

English marks the owner on the noun: my hands. German marks the owner with a Dativ pronoun and puts the plain article on the body part. Learn the shape as a unit: Dativ pronoun + der / die / das + body part.

Ich putze mir zweimal am Tag die Zähne.

I brush my teeth twice a day.

Wäschst du dir jeden Tag die Haare?

Do you wash your hair every day?

Doing something for yourself

The Dativ pronoun also means for myself, for yourself.

I'm just going to grab a coffee.

Kaufst du dir ein neues Handy?

Are you buying yourself a new phone?

Wir suchen uns eine größere Wohnung.

We're looking for a bigger flat for ourselves.
