From verb to noun
In nominalización (nominalisation) a verb becomes a noun: llegar becomes la llegada. A whole clause turns into a noun phrase that you can fit into a bigger sentence. Texts get denser and more impersonal. English does the same in reports: on the arrival of the train instead of when the train arrived.
Verbal, narrative
Cuando el tren llegó, la gente aplaudió.
When the train arrived, people clapped.
Nominal, reporting
La llegada del tren fue recibida con aplausos.
The arrival of the train was greeted with applause.

Building the noun phrase
- 1
Verb → noun: aprobar → la aprobación, crecer → el crecimiento.
- 2
Object → de: aprobar la ley → la aprobación de la ley.
- 3
Subject → de or por parte de: if the noun already has a de, the doer takes por parte de: la aprobación de la ley por parte del Gobierno. Pronouns become possessives: llegó → su llegada. Spanish has no 's, so the government's approval also needs de or por parte de.
- 4
Adverb → adjective: creció fuertemente → el fuerte crecimiento.
El fuerte crecimiento de las ventas sorprendió a los analistas.
The strong growth in sales surprised analysts.

When nominal style fits
Nominal style belongs in news, reports, headlines and technical texts. It is compact and impersonal, because it often leaves open who did what. In conversation and private messages it sounds like officialese.

Electricity prices up in the middle of winter.
A headline with no verb at all.
La reducción de plantilla se llevará a cabo en dos fases.
The reduction in staff will be carried out in two phases.
