Oraciones escindidas

It-cleft sentences with ser

Juan llamó reports a fact; Fue Juan quien llamó says: Juan, and nobody else.

One sentence, split in two

An oración escindida (cleft sentence) splits a sentence in two: ser + the highlighted phrase, then a relative clause with the rest. The highlighted phrase is the focus. It corrects or pins down who, where or when it was. English has the same pattern: It was Juan who called. Spanish simply has no it at the start.

Neutral

Juan llamó esta mañana.

Juan called this morning.

Focus on Juan

Fue Juan quien llamó esta mañana.

It was Juan who called this morning.

Not Marta, as you thought.

The pattern

ser+Focus+quien / donde / cuando / como / el que+Rest of the sentence=Fue aquí donde lo vi.

The relative word depends on the focus

Which relative word?

MannercomoEs así como se hace.

Fue tu hermana quien me lo contó.

It was your sister who told me.

Es el precio lo que me preocupa, no la calidad.

It's the price that worries me, not the quality.

Fue en Sevilla donde nos conocimos.

It was in Seville that we met.

Es así como se hace.

This is how it's done.

English uses that for almost everything here. Spanish picks the relative word to fit the focus: donde for a place, cuando for a time.

What ser takes on

  • Person and number: ser agrees with the focus, not with an imagined it. Fui yo quien lo hizo. Fueron ellos quienes avisaron.

  • Tense: ser usually takes the tense of the relative clause. Besides Fue Juan quien llamó, Es Juan quien llamó is also correct when you are stating the fact from the present.

  • Preposition: if the focus has a preposition, it is normally repeated before the relative word: Fue con Ana con quien hablé. Es a ti a quien busco.

Fui yo quien reservó la mesa.

It was me who booked the table.

Fueron los vecinos quienes llamaron a la policía.

It was the neighbours who called the police.

Fue con Ana con quien hablé, no con su socio.

It was Ana I spoke to, not her business partner.
