propio y mismo

Emphasis and identity: propio and mismo

El mismo médico is "the same doctor", el propio médico is "the doctor himself" — word order decides the meaning.

Three meanings, two words

propio and mismo agree in gender and number with the word they refer to. Depending on where they stand, they express identity (the same), emphasis (-self) or possession (own).

Emphatic -self: propio first or mismo after

mismo after adverbs sharpens time or place

Own: propio with a possessive

With a possessive before the noun, propio means "own", just like in English. It reinforces ownership and excludes others. Without propio the statement is neutral: su casa versus su propia casa.

Para mí, lo mismo que ayer.
