Juegos de palabras y doble sentido

Wordplay and double meaning

A pun leaves a second reading in on purpose; a misunderstanding leaves it in by accident.

Two readings in one sentence

In factual writing you clear ambiguity out of the way. A juego de palabras (pun) does the opposite: you leave a second reading standing because it adds a punchline or a second thought. Spanish does this all the time, in headlines, adverts, bar jokes and in doble sentido, the suggestive second meaning.

One headline, two meanings

El Gobierno se queda sin crédito.

The government runs out of credit, both money and credibility.

crédito means both a loan and trust.

La subida de la luz deja a muchas familias a oscuras.

The rise in electricity prices leaves many families in the dark.

In Spanish, luz is also the electricity bill; a oscuras works literally and figuratively.

Where the second reading comes from

The second meaning sits in the word, in the sound or in the word boundary.

Three sources

SourceWhat happensExample
PolisemiaOne word has two meanings.salero: salt shaker and charm
ParonimiaTwo words sound almost the same.focas / focos
SegmentaciónThe same string of sounds splits into words in a different way.escoja / es coja

Each source once

Ese cocinero tiene mucho salero.

That chef has plenty of charm – and apparently a big salt shaker.

salero as salt shaker and as wit, flair.

¿Por qué las focas miran siempre hacia arriba? Porque ahí están los focos.

Why do seals always look up? Because that's where the spotlights are.

focas (seals) and focos (spotlights) differ by one vowel.

Entre el clavel y la rosa, su majestad escoja.

Between the carnation and the rose, let Her Majesty choose.

Legend has Quevedo saying this to a queen who limped: spoken aloud, escoja sounds like es coja, she is lame.

Building a pun yourself

The method in four steps

  • 1

    Topic

Start from the topic of your text: a bakery, electricity, a kitchen. A pun that doesn't grow out of the topic feels stuck on.

  • 2

    Double word

Find a word or phrase from that field that also lives a figurative life: ganarse el pan, estar al corriente, salero.

  • 3

    Frame

Build a sentence in which the literal and the figurative meaning both hold.

  • 4

    Trim

Cut anything that gives the punchline away. A pun you have to explain is no longer a pun.

One method, three topics

En esta panadería nos ganamos el pan desde 1950.

At this bakery we've been earning our bread since 1950.

ganarse el pan means to earn a living, and here literally bread too.

Los electricistas siempre están al corriente.

Electricians are always up to date.

estar al corriente means to be informed; corriente is also electric current.

Mi cuñado es piloto: se pasa la vida en las nubes.

My brother-in-law is a pilot, so he spends his life with his head in the clouds.

estar en las nubes means to be absent-minded, and for a pilot it is literal too.

Doble sentido, intended and unintended

Doble sentido usually means a suggestive second reading. In Mexico the albur is a verbal art form: people trade lines with a hidden sexual reading, and whoever fails to come back with one loses. As a learner you'll spot these games from the laughter around you; you don't have to join in.

The unintended doble sentido is riskier. Some words are harmless only in one region. The best-known case is coger: in Spain it means to take, in Mexico, Argentina and other countries it is a vulgar word for sex.

Same intention, two regions

Voy a coger el autobús.

I'm taking the bus.

Entirely neutral in Spain.

Voy a tomar el autobús.

I'm taking the bus.

The safe choice across most of Latin America, and understood in Spain too.

Why puns don't travel

A pun depends on two meanings sharing one sound sequence in Spanish. In English they usually don't. Sometimes you get lucky: left in the dark carries almost the same double load as a oscuras. Most of the time, though, you translate the effect, not the word, and build a new pun from English material.
