A1Verbs

Présent: Verbes en -re

Present Tense: -re Verbs

The smallest regular group - and the only one where he/she/it takes no ending at all.

How it works

The third regular group has the infinitive (base form) ending -re, like vendre (to sell). Drop -re to get the stem, then add the ending for the person. Unlike -er verbs, there is no -e here.

From infinitive to form

vendre→vend-+-s=je vends

The endings: vendre

vendre (to sell)

vendre in a sentence

Je vends ma voiture.

I'm selling my car.

Il vend des fruits au marché.

He sells fruit at the market.

Ils vendent leur appartement.

They are selling their flat.

Pronunciation: the d

In the singular the d is silent: je vends, tu vends and il vend sound the same, [vɑ̃]. In ils vendent the d is heard, [vɑ̃d]. That is how you hear whether someone means one person or several.

Hear the difference

il vend

he sells, [vɑ̃]

ils vendent

they sell, [vɑ̃d]
