The stem ét-
The imparfait is normally built from the nous form of the present tense. That does not work for être, because nous sommes gives no usable stem. So être has a stem of its own.

Il était trois heures quand nous sommes arrivés.
It was three o’clock when we arrived.
C’était l’été, nous étions en vacances.
It was summer, we were on holiday.

C’était (“it was”, “that was”) judges a whole situation or thing. It is one of the most common phrases in conversation.
