B1Verbs

Le subjonctif : verbes irréguliers

The subjunctive: irregular verbs

Seven verbs escape the ils rule — and they are exactly the ones you use daily.

Why these verbs are the exception

Normally you take the subjunctive stem from the ils form of the present. For these seven very common verbs that does not work: they have a stem of their own or, in the case of être and avoir, forms of their own.

être and avoir — forms of their own

être and avoir

Personêtreavoir
que je / que j'soisaie
que tusoisaies
qu'il / elle / onsoitait
que noussoyonsayons
que voussoyezayez
qu'ils / ellessoientaient

Present subjunctive

être and avoir in a sentence

Il faut que tu sois à l'heure.

You have to be on time.

Je suis content que vous soyez là.

I'm glad you're here.

I need to have my passport on me.

I'm glad she finally has a job.

One stem — faire, pouvoir, savoir

These three have a single stem for all six persons and the normal endings: fass-, puiss-, sach-.

faire, pouvoir, savoir

Personfairepouvoirsavoir
que jefassepuissesache
que tufassespuissessaches
qu'il / elle / onfassepuissesache
que nousfassionspuissionssachions
que vousfassiezpuissiezsachiez
qu'ils / ellesfassentpuissentsachent

fass- / puiss- / sach- + normal endings

The three in a sentence

Il faut que tu fasses attention.

You have to pay attention.

I'm sorry he can't come on Saturday.

Je veux que tu saches la vérité.

I want you to know the truth.

Two stems — aller and vouloir

These two behave like boire or prendre: a strong stem for je, tu, il, ils, and for nous and vous the stem of the nous form, which is the same as in the imperfect.

aller, vouloir

Personallervouloir
que je / que j'ailleveuille
que tuaillesveuilles
qu'il / elle / onailleveuille
que nousallionsvoulions
que vousalliezvouliez
qu'ils / ellesaillentveuillent

Two stems in a sentence

I have to go to the bank this morning.

She wants us to go to the market with her.
