B2Sentence structure

Unreal Comparisons: als ob

“As if he were listening” is the last English subjunctive still breathing. German uses the Konjunktiv II every time and moves the verb depending on which connector you pick.

Saying that it only looks that way

Some clauses describe an appearance, not a fact: He acts as if he owned the place means he does not. German introduces such a clause with als ob and puts the verb into the Konjunktiv II. The mood carries the message this is not (necessarily) true.

Er tut so, als ob er nichts wüsste.

He acts as if he knew nothing.

Sie redet, als ob sie hier die Chefin wäre.

She talks as if she were the boss here.

Ich fühle mich, als ob ich Fieber hätte.

I feel as if I had a temperature.

Dropping ob: the verb moves

You can also leave out ob (or use als wenn, which is more colloquial and works like als ob). Without ob the clause is no longer a subordinate clause: the finite verb jumps to the slot directly after als.

als ob er müde wäre→als wäre er müde

Nothing may stand between als and the verb. This version is common and elegant, especially in writing.

Es klingt, als wüsste sie schon Bescheid.

It sounds as if she already knew.

Er sah aus, als hätte er geweint.

He looked as if he had been crying.

Er ging weiter, als wäre nichts gewesen.

He walked on as if nothing had happened.

Choosing the form

The comparison isFormExample
at the same timeKonjunktiv II (wäre, hätte, wüsste …)Sie tut so, als ob sie Zeit hätte.
earlierhätte / wäre plus Partizip IISie tut so, als ob sie mich nicht gehört hätte.
at the same time or laterwürde plus infinitiveEs sieht aus, als ob es gleich regnen würde.

The main clause can be present or past; it does not change the choice.

würde plus infinitive is fully acceptable and often preferred, because the one-word Konjunktiv II of many verbs (sähe, träfe) sounds bookish. Keep the one-word forms for the common ones: wäre, hätte, wüsste, könnte, müsste, ginge, käme.

Er begrüßte mich, als ob wir uns nie gestritten hätten.

He greeted me as if we had never argued.

Sie begrüßt mich, als würden wir uns seit Jahren kennen.

She greets me as if we had known each other for years.

Konjunktiv II or Indikativ?

The Konjunktiv II says the impression is not true: Er tut so, als ob er reich wäre means he is not rich. After verbs like es sieht aus and es klingt, spoken German often uses the Indikativ with als ob, which leaves it open whether the impression is right. With bare als the Konjunktiv is obligatory: als wäre er müde, never als ist er müde.

Er tut so, als ob er reich wäre.

He acts as if he were rich.

He is not.

Es sieht aus, als ob es gleich regnet.

It looks like it's going to rain.

Spoken German; it may well rain.

Frames that open the clause

  • so tun, als ob — to pretend

  • es sieht (so) aus, als ob — it looks as if

  • es klingt, als ob — it sounds as if

  • es kommt mir vor, als ob — it seems to me as if

  • ich fühle mich, als ob — I feel as if

Tu nicht so, als wüsstest du das nicht!

Don't pretend you didn't know that!

Es kommt mir vor, als hätten wir uns gestern erst gesehen.

It seems to me as if we had only seen each other yesterday.
