C1Sentence structure

Nominalisierung: Satz ↔ Nominalphrase umformen

Turning clauses into noun phrases and back

The noun is the easy part. Adverbs, negation, modal verbs and tense all have to change shape too, and you decide which direction serves the text.

Everything in the clause has to go somewhere

Turning a verb into a noun is only the first step. Every other word in the clause needs a new form as well: the adverb becomes an adjective, nicht becomes a prefix or a preposition, a modal verb becomes a noun of its own. This lesson works through these pieces one at a time.

Clause to noun phrase

weil die Preise stark steigen→aufgrund des starken Anstiegs der Preise

Piece by piece

What becomes of each part

In the clauseVerbalNominal
adverb → adjectivewenn man schnell reagiertbei schneller Reaktion

Two choices are open for an intransitive verb. A participle keeps the process visible: der steigenden Preise. A noun names it as an event: des Preisanstiegs. Both are correct. The participle reads more smoothly when a Genitiv would follow a Genitiv.

Aufgrund der steigenden Preise verzichten viele auf den Urlaub.

Because of rising prices, many people are going without a holiday.

Bei schneller Reaktion lässt sich der Schaden begrenzen.

If you react quickly, the damage can be limited.

Das Verfahren wurde mangels Beweisen eingestellt.

Bei Nichtgefallen erhalten Sie Ihr Geld zurück.

If you're not satisfied, you'll get your money back.

Unpacking for readability

The reverse skill matters as much. A chain of nouns packs several events into one phrase, and the reader has to work out who does what. When a sentence holds more than two nouns made from verbs, unpack one of them into a clause. Name the doer again, and use a conjunction that shows the logic.
