Taking the speaker out
Reports, studies and official letters avoid ich and wir when they draw conclusions. The claim should sound like a result, not like an opinion. German builds these impersonal frames from sich lassen and sein + zu with a placeholder es and a dass- or ob-clause.
One conclusion, three voices
Ich glaube, dass die Kosten weiter steigen.
I think costs will keep rising.
Personal opinion. Speech, emails.
Man kann davon ausgehen, dass die Kosten weiter steigen.
You can assume that costs will keep rising.
Neutral, a little informal for a report.
Es ist davon auszugehen, dass die Kosten weiter steigen.
It can be assumed that costs will continue to rise.
Impersonal. Report, study, official letter.
The fixed frames
es lässt sich means something can be done. es ist zu means it can or must be done, and the verb decides which. es bleibt zu works like es ist zu and adds still: it is still to be done. Learn the frames as wholes: they are the building blocks of formal argument.
Frequent frames
| Frame | English | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Es lässt sich feststellen, dass … | It can be observed that … | presenting a finding |
| Es lässt sich nicht ausschließen, dass … | It cannot be ruled out that … | a cautious possibility |
| Es ist davon auszugehen, dass … | It can be assumed that … | a confident assumption |
| Es ist zu beachten, dass … | It should be noted that … | a must: pointing out a condition |
| Es ist anzunehmen, dass … | It is likely that … | a probable conclusion |
| Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob … | It remains to be seen whether … | an open question |
If the verb takes a preposition, the frame carries a da(r)- word that points ahead to the clause: ausgehen von gives davon auszugehen, hinweisen auf gives darauf hinzuweisen, streiten über gives darüber streiten.
Es ist darauf hinzuweisen, dass die Daten aus dem Jahr 2022 stammen.
It should be pointed out that the data date from 2022.
Es lässt sich darüber streiten, ob die Maßnahme sinnvoll war.
It is debatable whether the measure made sense.
Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob das neue Gesetz etwas ändert.
It remains to be seen whether the new law will change anything.
The es only holds the first position
This es is a placeholder. It is there only because nothing else stands before the verb. Once a linking word, an adverbial or the clause itself takes the first position, es disappears. This is how the frames link into a text: daraus, hier, dabei, insgesamt.
Linking word first, es gone
Daraus lässt sich schließen, dass das Angebot zu teuer war.
From this it can be concluded that the offer was too expensive.
Dabei ist zu berücksichtigen, dass viele Befragte keine Angaben gemacht haben.
It should be borne in mind that many respondents gave no answer.
Ob das reicht, bleibt abzuwarten.
Whether that is enough remains to be seen.
