Particles add up
Native speakers rarely use particles one at a time. Two or three together mix their attitudes: doch (you know this) plus wohl (I assume) gives surely you don't mean that. The combinations are fixed in their order, and many work only in one sentence type.
One question, rising pressure
Hast du den Schlüssel vergessen?
Did you forget the key?
A neutral question.
Du hast doch nicht den Schlüssel vergessen?
You didn't forget the key, did you?
Hoping for a no.
Du hast doch wohl nicht den Schlüssel vergessen?
Surely you haven't gone and forgotten the key?
Expecting a no and getting annoyed already.
Three more partners
Many combinations include three particles you will hear constantly. Here is what each brings on its own.
| Particle | What it adds | Example |
|---|---|---|
| denn | Only in questions: real interest, sometimes surprise. Without it many questions sound abrupt. | Wo warst du denn? |
| eigentlich | In questions: by the way, opens a new topic. | Wie alt ist sie eigentlich? |
| schon | Reassures: don't worry, it will be fine. | Das klappt schon. |
The common combinations
doch mal: friendly push
In imperatives and suggestions: come on, why not.
Probier's doch mal mit einer anderen Einstellung.
Why don't you try a different setting?
denn eigentlich, denn überhaupt: questions with an edge
denn eigentlich asks with casual curiosity. denn überhaupt questions whether the basis is there at all.
Was machst du denn eigentlich beruflich?
So what do you actually do for a living?
Hast du denn überhaupt Zeit dafür?
Do you even have time for that?
Sag mal, ist das denn wirklich so?
Hang on, is that really the case?
Sag mal opens a question that challenges what was just said.
ja wohl, doch wohl: indignation
In statements, ja wohl expresses outrage. doch wohl demands agreement the speaker takes for granted.
Das ist ja wohl die Höhe!
That really is the limit!
Das kannst du doch wohl nicht ernst meinen.
You can't seriously mean that.
ja mal, doch mal wieder: surprise and resignation
ja mal marks a pleasant surprise in an exclamation. doch mal wieder (yet again, as expected) complains that something predictable has happened.
Das ist ja mal eine gute Nachricht!
Now that's good news for a change!
Das ist doch mal wieder typisch.
Typical. Here we go again.
schon mal: go ahead
In imperatives: start without waiting for the rest.
Geht schon mal vor, wir kommen gleich nach.
You go on ahead, we'll catch up.
The order is fixed
In a combination, ja and doch, which appeal to shared knowledge, come early, and the softener mal comes last. So ja stands before wohl and mal, denn and doch stand before mal, and denn stands before eigentlich and überhaupt. Learn the pairs as fixed units rather than working out the order each time.
| Say | Not |
|---|---|
| doch mal | mal doch |
| ja wohl | wohl ja |
| denn eigentlich | eigentlich denn |
| ja mal | mal ja |
Two particles are normal, three are possible in emotional speech, more sound like a parody. In emails to people you know, one combination per message is plenty.
