From clause to noun phrase
In nominalizzazione a verb becomes a noun. A whole clause shrinks into a noun phrase. The subject of the verb attaches with di.
Conversion
Verbal style and nominal style
Verbal style: conversation, storytelling
Siamo usciti dopo che il treno è partito.
We left after the train had gone.
Le vendite sono calate perché i prezzi sono aumentati.
Sales have fallen because prices have gone up.
Nominal style: reports, news
Siamo usciti dopo la partenza del treno.
We left after the departure of the train.
Il calo delle vendite è dovuto all'aumento dei prezzi.
The fall in sales is due to the rise in prices.
How the nouns are formed
There is no rule for which verb takes which ending. The patterns help you recognise the nouns; the form itself you learn with the word.
Common patterns
| Pattern | Examples |
|---|---|
| -zione, -sione | organizzare → organizzazione, ridurre → riduzione, decidere → decisione |
| -mento | pagare → pagamento, cambiare → cambiamento |
| -enza, -anza | partire → partenza, assistere → assistenza |
| -tura, -sura | aprire → apertura, chiudere → chiusura |
| -ita, -ata | uscire → uscita, vendere → vendita, passeggiare → passeggiata |
| no ending | arrivare → arrivo, aumentare → aumento, controllare → controllo, verificare → verifica |
Adjectives can be nominalised too: è difficile → la difficoltà, è possibile → la possibilità, è lento → la lentezza.
What happens to subject and object
Subject and direct object both become di. The person or body acting can be added with da parte di. If the verb has its own preposition, the noun keeps it.
Complements of the noun
| Verb clause | Noun phrase |
|---|---|
| Il treno arriva. | l'arrivo del treno |
| Il Comune costruisce il ponte. | la costruzione del ponte da parte del Comune |
| Partecipo al convegno. | la partecipazione al convegno |
| Dipendiamo dal petrolio. | la dipendenza dal petrolio |

When nominal style fits
Nominal style is typical of headlines, notices, reports, minutes and academic writing. It saves words and sounds matter-of-fact. In conversation it sounds stiff, and too many nouns in a row make any text hard to read.
Sciopero dei treni: cancellazione di 200 corse.
Rail strike: 200 services cancelled.
headline
Chiusura dell'ufficio per lavori di manutenzione.
Office closed for maintenance.
notice
English often stacks nouns: train departure, price rise, road closure. Italian cannot put one noun in front of another like that. It uses noun + di: la partenza del treno, l'aumento dei prezzi.
