Raccontare al passato remoto

Passato remoto: writing biographies and stories yourself

The passato remoto carries the plot, the imperfetto the background – and once you pick a narrative tense, you stick with it.

A biography as a chain of events

Encyclopedia entries, museum texts and obituaries almost always tell a life in the passato remoto. Every event that moves the life story forward gets its own form: born, graduated, founded, died. In between, the imperfetto describes what the world was like back then. English uses the simple past for both; Italian splits the work.

Maria Montessori in four sentences

Maria Montessori nacque a Chiaravalle nel 1870.

Maria Montessori was born in Chiaravalle in 1870.

In 1896 she graduated in medicine, at a time when women doctors were extremely rare.

Event in the passato remoto, background in the imperfetto.

In 1907 she opened the first Children's House in Rome.

Morì nei Paesi Bassi nel 1952.

She died in the Netherlands in 1952.

Before and after the narrative time

A text in the passato remoto needs two more tenses. What happened earlier goes in the trapassato prossimo. What will happen later, seen from inside the story, goes in the condizionale passato. This "future in the past" is a favourite in biographies because it foreshadows.

Looking back and looking ahead

When he arrived in Milan, his brother had already left.

earlier: trapassato prossimo

In Paris he met a young painter who was to become his wife.

later: condizionale passato

Nobody imagined that the book would change his life.

English says would change or was to become. Italian does not copy the simple would: the fixed solution is the condizionale passato, sarebbe diventata, not diventerebbe.

Telling a story in the first person

In novels and memoirs a first-person narrator also uses the passato remoto: capii, decisi, rimasi. You meet these io forms less often than the third person when reading, but you need them to write. The choice changes the tone: the passato remoto puts the experience at a distance, the passato prossimo brings it close.

The same memory, two stances

Passato remoto: literary, closed

That evening I understood it was over. I took the first train and never went back.

Passato prossimo: personal, told as in conversation

That evening I understood it was over. I took the first train and never went back.

Same words in English – in Italian the distance shifts.

Practise it in conversation.
