Five words for the timeline
You can already name a point in time: um acht, am Montag, im Juli. The prepositions below tell you how one time relates to another: before it, after it, since it, in so much time, until it.
vor and nach
vor is before, nach is after. Whatever follows goes into the Dativ: der Kurs becomes vor dem Kurs, die Pause becomes nach der Pause.
Vor dem Essen wasche ich mir die Hände.
Before eating I wash my hands.
Wir treffen uns vor dem Kurs.
We're meeting before the class.
Nach der Arbeit gehe ich schwimmen.
After work I go swimming.
Counting from now: vor and in
With a length of time, vor means ago. English puts ago at the end, German puts vor at the front: vor drei Tagen. For the future German uses in: in drei Tagen is in three days.
Both take the Dativ, so a plural noun adds -n unless it already ends in one: Tage becomes vor drei Tagen, Jahre becomes vor zwei Jahren, Wochen stays in zwei Wochen.
Vor drei Tagen habe ich ihn getroffen.
I met him three days ago.
Vor einer Woche habe ich meinen Schlüssel verloren.
A week ago I lost my key.
In drei Tagen fliege ich nach Rom.
In three days I'm flying to Rome.
In einer halben Stunde bin ich da.
I'll be there in half an hour.
seit: the present tense
English uses the present perfect for something that started in the past and is still true: I have lived here for three years, she has been ill since Monday. German uses the plain present tense, because the situation is still going on. seit carries the information about how long.
seit covers both English since and for. seit Montag names a starting point, seit drei Tagen names a length. für is only for a stretch that is planned or finished: Ich fahre für zwei Wochen nach Spanien.
Ich kenne ihn seit 2019.
I have known him since 2019.
Wir warten seit einer Stunde.
We have been waiting for an hour.
Sie ist seit Montag erkältet.
She has had a cold since Monday.
Ich lerne seit sechs Monaten Deutsch.
I have been learning German for six months.
bis
bis is until. For days and times it takes no article: bis Freitag, bis morgen, bis acht Uhr. If an article is needed, bis is followed by zu: bis zum Wochenende, bis zur nächsten Stunde.
Bis morgen!
See you tomorrow!
Bis gleich!
See you in a minute!
Der Laden ist bis Freitag geschlossen.
The shop is closed until Friday.
Ich brauche das bis zum Wochenende.
I need it by the weekend.
