A2Verbs

Simple Past: sein, haben, modals

In conversation German uses the Perfekt for most verbs. Only sein, haben and the modals keep a short one-word past.

Which verbs use the short past

When Germans talk about the past, they mostly use the Perfekt: Ich habe ein Fahrrad gekauft. Three kinds of verbs are the exception. sein, haben and the modal verbs use the one-word past, the Präteritum, even in conversation. The Perfekt of these verbs is possible, but it sounds heavy.

war, hatte and the endings

sein, haben and können in the Präteritum

Personseinhabenkönnen
ichwarhattekonnte
duwarsthattestkonntest
er / sie / eswarhattekonnte
wirwarenhattenkonnten
ihrwarthattetkonntet
sie / Siewarenhattenkonnten

All three take the same endings. können stands for all the modals.

ich and er / sie / es always have the same form: ich war, er war; ich hatte, er hatte. The stem of haben changes to hatt-.

Wo warst du am Wochenende?

Where were you at the weekend?

Ihr wart gar nicht da!

You weren't there at all!

Hattest du gestern frei?

Did you have the day off yesterday?

Wir hatten viel Glück mit dem Wetter.

We were very lucky with the weather.

The modal verbs

The modals form the Präteritum very regularly: take the stem, drop the Umlaut, add -te. Then the endings from the table above follow.

ich / er form. mögen is the one irregular case: g becomes ch.

Only the modal changes. The second verb stays an infinitive at the end of the sentence, as in the present.

Ich konnte gestern nicht kommen.

I couldn't come yesterday.

Wir mussten eine Stunde am Bahnhof warten.

We had to wait an hour at the station.

Wir wollten eigentlich ins Schwimmbad.

We actually wanted to go to the swimming pool.

no second verb: gehen is understood

Als Kind durfte ich nie lange fernsehen.

As a child I was never allowed to watch TV for long.

Ich sollte um acht zu Hause sein.

I was supposed to be home at eight.

Ich mochte den Film nicht.

I didn't like the film.

Both pasts in one story

In a real story you mix the two: the short verbs take the Präteritum, every other verb takes the Perfekt, often in the same sentence.

Ich war müde und bin früh ins Bett gegangen.

I was tired and went to bed early.

Ich war letzte Woche krank und habe viel geschlafen.

I was ill last week and slept a lot.
