B1Sentence structure

Subordinate Clauses: obwohl

German obwohl means although. It works like weil: the verb goes to the end of its clause.

obwohl sends the verb to the end

obwohl introduces something that should have stopped you, but did not. It rains, and you go for a walk anyway. The meaning is the same as English although. The grammar is the same as after weil and dass: a Nebensatz with the conjugated verb in last position.

Wir gehen spazieren, obwohl es regnet.

We're going for a walk although it's raining.

Ich bin gekommen, obwohl ich keine Zeit hatte.

I came even though I didn't have time.

Sie arbeitet weiter, obwohl sie Urlaub nehmen könnte.

She keeps working although she could take time off.

The obwohl clause first

The obwohl clause can also open the sentence. The whole clause fills position 1, so the verb of the main clause follows directly after the comma, before its subject. You get two conjugated verbs next to each other: verb, comma, verb.

Verb, comma, verb

Obwohl es regnet,→gehen→wir spazieren.

Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.

Although it's raining, we're going for a walk.

Obwohl es teuer war, hat es sich gelohnt.

Although it was expensive, it was worth it.

Obwohl ich jeden Tag lerne, vergesse ich die Artikel ständig.

Although I study every day, I keep forgetting the articles.

obwohl or weil?

weil gives the reason for what happens. obwohl names a reason that would speak against it.

Wir bleiben zu Hause, weil es regnet.

We're staying at home because it's raining.

Wir gehen raus, obwohl es regnet.

We're going out although it's raining.
