B2Sentence structure

Nominal Style

Official German names the action instead of describing it: a noun with a preposition takes the place of a whole clause.

Two ways to say the same thing

Spoken German builds sentences around verbs and subordinate clauses: Nachdem wir die Unterlagen geprüft haben, melden wir uns. Formal writing often turns the verb into a noun and the clause into a phrase: Nach der Prüfung der Unterlagen melden wir uns. Verb-based style is called Verbalstil, noun-based style Nominalstil. You find the second in contracts, official letters, academic writing and the news.

The same message, both ways

Nachdem wir die Unterlagen geprüft haben, melden wir uns.

After we have checked the documents, we will get in touch.

Verbalstil: a clause

Nach der Prüfung der Unterlagen melden wir uns.

After the examination of the documents we will get in touch.

Nominalstil: a noun phrase

Turning a verb into a noun

The ending of the noun tells you its gender. -ung and -ion are always die, and a capitalised infinitive is always das. These are the two patterns you can use for almost any verb.

The main patterns

PatternArticleVerb → nounEnglish
Stem + -ungdieprüfen → die Prüfungto check → the examination
Infinitive as a noundasrauchen → das Rauchento smoke → smoking
-ieren verb → -iondieproduzieren → die Produktionto produce → production
Bare stemmostly derbeginnen → der Beginnto begin → the start
Stem + -tmostly diefahren → die Fahrt, ankommen → die Ankunftto drive → the trip, to arrive → the arrival

Das Rauchen ist hier verboten.

Smoking is forbidden here.

Das lange Warten hat alle genervt.

The long wait annoyed everyone.

a nominalised infinitive takes adjectives like any noun

Die Ankunft des Zuges verzögert sich.

The arrival of the train is delayed.

Wir arbeiten an einer Lösung des Problems.

We are working on a solution to the problem.

What happens to the clause

The conjunction has to become a preposition. Learn these pairs together.

Conjunction to preposition

VerbalstilNominalstilEnglish
weil es geregnet hatwegen des Regensbecause it rained → because of the rain
obwohl es geregnet hattrotz des Regensalthough it rained → despite the rain
nachdem er angekommen warnach seiner Ankunftafter he had arrived → after his arrival
bevor die Sitzung beginntvor Beginn der Sitzungbefore the meeting starts → before the start
während wir gearbeitet habenwährend der Arbeitwhile we were working → during the work
wenn es regnetbei Regenif it rains → in case of rain
damit sich die Lage verbessertzur Verbesserung der Lageso that things improve → to improve things

The old object lands in the Genitiv behind the noun: die Unterlagen prüfen → die Prüfung der Unterlagen. A person as old subject usually becomes a possessive: nachdem er angekommen war → nach seiner Ankunft. If you still need the doer, add durch: die Prüfung des Antrags durch die Behörde. Signs and forms often drop the article: bei Regen, ohne Anmeldung, unter Vorbehalt.

Wir entscheiden, nachdem wir mit dem Chef gesprochen haben.

We will decide after we have spoken with the boss.

Wir entscheiden nach dem Gespräch mit dem Chef.

We will decide after the conversation with the boss.

Nach der Prüfung des Antrags durch die Behörde bekommen Sie Post.

After the application has been examined by the authority you will receive a letter.

with a noun, the doer is added with durch

Unpacking a nominal phrase

  • 1

Find the noun made from a verb

Look for -ung, -ion, a capitalised infinitive or a bare stem like Beginn or Antrag.

  • 2

    Recover the verb

die Prüfung → prüfen, die Bearbeitung → bearbeiten, die Ankunft → ankommen.

  • 3

Turn the preposition back into a conjunction

Use the table above in reverse: wegen → weil, trotz → obwohl, nach → nachdem.

  • 4

Give the verb its people back

The Genitiv or possessive becomes the subject or object: nach seiner Ankunft → nachdem er angekommen ist.
