C1Vocabulary

Kollokationen

Collocations

A heavy smoker is *ein starker Raucher* in German. Grammar allows many words; habit picks one.

Words that go together

A Kollokation is a word pair that native speakers simply expect: Maßnahmen ergreifen, not Maßnahmen nehmen. The other choice is often grammatical and even understandable, but it marks you as a translator. At C1 the pairs matter more than single words, because they decide whether a text sounds German.

Understandable versus idiomatic

Die Regierung nimmt Maßnahmen.

The government takes measures.

Word-for-word from English. Sounds wrong.

Die Regierung ergreift Maßnahmen.

The government takes measures.

The expected pair.

Noun plus verb

Most mistakes happen here, because English take, make, have and raise map onto many different German verbs. Learn the noun with its verb, and with its preposition if it has one.

Adjective plus noun

I'm dying to know what happens next.
