Wortbildung: Präfixe und Suffixe zur Bedeutungssteuerung

Word formation: steering meaning with prefixes and suffixes

*childlike* and *childish* exist in German too: *kindlich* and *kindisch*. Small affixes carry big differences in tone.

One stem, many meanings

German builds new words from a small stock of prefixes and suffixes, and each one steers the meaning in a predictable direction. Once you know the direction, you can understand words you have never seen and pick the exact form you need.

schreiben, steered

Ich habe ihm eine Nachricht geschrieben.

I wrote him a message.

Entschuldigung, ich habe mich verschrieben.

Sorry, that was a typo.

sich ver- + verb: by mistake.
