Futuro semplice

Simple Future

Infinitive stem plus ending: what will happen later.

How is the Futuro semplice built?

Take the infinitive without the final -e and add an ending. All three verb groups take the same endings.

The pattern

parler-+-ò=parlerò

The three verb groups

Person-are: parlare-ere: credere-ire: partire
ioparleròcrederòpartirò
tuparleraicrederaipartirai
lui / leiparleràcrederàpartirà
noiparleremocrederemopartiremo
voiparleretecrederetepartirete
loroparlerannocrederannopartiranno

parlare (to speak), credere (to believe), partire (to leave)

With -are verbs the a becomes e: parlare becomes parlerò, not parlarò.

One sentence from each group

Ti parlerò più tardi.

I will talk to you later.

Nessuno mi crederà.

Nobody will believe me.

Partiremo lunedì mattina.

We will leave on Monday morning.

The accent

Only the io form (-ò) and the lui/lei form (-à) have an accent, because the last syllable is stressed. The only difference is the final vowel.

parlerò

parlerò: I will speak (io)

parlerà

parlerà: he/she will speak (lui/lei)

What is the Futuro semplice used for?

Plans and promises

L'anno prossimo viaggeremo in Italia.

Next year we will travel to Italy.

Ti chiamerò stasera.

I will call you tonight.

Predictions

Domani pioverà su tutta la regione.

Tomorrow it will rain across the whole region.

Il film ti piacerà.

You will like the film.

Typical time expressions

domanila settimana prossimal'anno prossimofra una settimanaprestoun giorno

For fixed plans with a time expression, the present is often enough, just as in English "I am leaving tomorrow": Domani parto per Roma. The future sounds more like a prediction, a promise or the more distant future.
