A new stem, the same endings
Some very common verbs have a shortened or changed stem in the future. Only the stem is irregular: the endings are the same as in the regular future (-ò, -ai, -à, -emo, -ete, -anno).
The stem stays the same in every person
essere has a stem of its own: sar-. In avere and andare the vowel before -re drops out: avr-, andr-.
essere, avere, andare in the future
| Person | essere | avere | andare |
|---|---|---|---|
| io | sarò | avrò | andrò |
| tu | sarai | avrai | andrai |
| lui/lei | sarà | avrà | andrà |
| noi | saremo | avremo | andremo |
| voi | sarete | avrete | andrete |
| loro | saranno | avranno | andranno |
essere (to be) · avere (to have) · andare (to go)
Domani sarò a Roma.
Tomorrow I will be in Rome.
Avrai tempo domani?
Will you have time tomorrow?
Domenica andremo al mare.
On Sunday we will go to the seaside.
Three patterns for the other verbs
1. The vowel drops out
The vowel before the -re of the infinitive disappears: avere → avr-.
Non potrò venire alla festa.
I will not be able to come to the party.
Dovrai studiare di più.
You will have to study more.
2. The vowel drops out, with -rr- before it
Here the vowel drops out too, and the consonant before it becomes rr: venire → verr-.
Domani verrò da te.
Tomorrow I will come to your place.
Stasera rimarremo a casa.
Tonight we will stay at home.
3. fare, dare, stare keep the a
These three -are verbs do not change the a into an e, as regular -are verbs do: fare → far-.
Cosa farai nel weekend?
What will you do at the weekend?
Starò a casa stasera.
I will stay at home tonight.
