Condizionale presente

Present conditional

Vorrei un caffè. Potresti aiutarmi? — the form that turns a demand into a request.

The difference between demanding and asking

Voglio un caffè means I want a coffee. It is grammatical but sounds blunt in a café. Vorrei un caffè means I'd like a coffee, and that is what people say.

The Condizionale presente softens the tone. It says what you would like, what somebody could do and what you would do in their place. English uses would, could and should for this. The difference: English keeps would as a separate word that never changes, while Italian has no word for would. The meaning sits in the verb ending, so it changes with the person: verrei, verresti, verrebbe.

The forms

Drop the final e of the infinitive and add the ending. With -are verbs the a turns into e: parlare → parler-. The endings are the same for all three conjugations.

The irregular stems

The irregular stems are the same as in the future: sarò and andrò become sarei and andrei. The endings stay regular.

Cautious opinion
