How certain is the claim?
In academic writing every claim signals how solid it is. This is attenuazione, or hedging. Besides modal verbs in the condizionale, Italian has three more tools: impersonal si with the condizionale, verbs of appearance such as sembrare, and cautious adverbs such as verosimilmente.

Hedged
I dati raccolti sembrano indicare che il lavoro da remoto possa ridurre, almeno in parte, la produttività.
The data collected seem to suggest that remote work may, at least in part, reduce productivity.
Backed by data, limited in scope.
Small words narrow the scope: verosimilmente and presumibilmente (presumably), in una certa misura (to some extent), almeno in parte (at least in part), per lo più (mostly). They do not weaken the whole claim, only its reach.
Whose view is speaking?
Italian academic texts usually avoid io. Your own position goes through noi (even with a single author) or through si. With other people's positions, the formula shows whether you agree or keep your distance.

English academic writing increasingly accepts I argue that. In Italian this still sounds personal and a little bold. The author's noi or impersonal si is the safer default: In questo capitolo analizziamo ….
