Linguaggio giuridico

Writing legal and official Italian

In everyday life you write "Se non paghi entro giugno", in an application "Qualora il pagamento non sia effettuato entro e non oltre il 30 giugno".

The application: I in the third person

Applications (istanze) and self-certifications (autocertificazioni) open with Il sottoscritto or La sottoscritta, the undersigned. Then come your name, place and date of birth, and address. The verb is in the third person and is often written in capitals so the actual request stands out: CHIEDE, DICHIARA, COMUNICA.

Opening of an application

Il sottoscritto+name, nato a … il …, residente a …+CHIEDE+subject matter

Two typical openings

Il sottoscritto Marco Bianchi, nato a Torino il 3 maggio 1985 e residente a Bologna, via Mazzini 12, chiede il rimborso della tassa di iscrizione versata per l'anno 2026.

I, the undersigned Marco Bianchi, born in Turin on 3 May 1985 and resident at Via Mazzini 12, Bologna, request a refund of the enrolment fee paid for 2026.

La sottoscritta Giulia Rossi, consapevole delle sanzioni penali previste in caso di dichiarazioni mendaci, dichiara di essere residente nel Comune di Parma.

I, the undersigned Giulia Rossi, aware of the criminal penalties for false statements, declare that I am resident in the municipality of Parma.

English forms let you switch to I after "I, the undersigned". Italian applications stay in the third person throughout, right down to the closing line: Il sottoscritto allega copia del documento di identità.

Formulas you use yourself

A handful of phrases carry most of the official tone. With fatto salvo the participle agrees with the noun that follows, because it is a shortened participle clause.
