Where ein has no ending
Der Mann has an -r on the article, das Auto an -s. But ein Mann and ein Auto have nothing. German does not leave that blank: the ending lands on the adjective instead.
The ending moves one word to the right
The paradigm
gut after the indefinite article
| Case | masculine | feminine | neuter | plural (kein) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ | ein guter Wein | eine gute Suppe | ein gutes Bier | keine guten Ideen |
| Akkusativ | einen guten Wein | eine gute Suppe | ein gutes Bier | keine guten Ideen |
| Dativ | einem guten Wein | einer guten Suppe | einem guten Bier | keinen guten Ideen |
ein Wein (m), eine Suppe (f), ein Bier (n). Ein has no plural, so the plural column uses kein. Only the three marked boxes differ from the pattern after der, die, das.
Learn the three special places as sounds: ein guter Wein, ein gutes Bier. After that, every other box is -e after eine and -en everywhere else.
Through the cases
Ein großer Mann steht vor der Tür.
A tall man is standing at the door.
masculine Nominativ
Das ist ein neues Auto.
That's a new car.
neuter Nominativ
Eine kleine Frau wartet dort.
A small woman is waiting over there.
eine already has its ending
Ich suche einen billigen Tisch.
I'm looking for a cheap table.
masculine Akkusativ: einen is marked, so -en
Ich habe ein kleines Problem.
I have a small problem.
neuter Akkusativ: -es
Wir wohnen in einer kleinen Wohnung.
We live in a small flat.
Dativ: always -en
kein, mein and the other ein-words
kein, mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer and Ihr decline like ein, so the adjective after them takes the same endings. Unlike ein, they have a plural, and there they are fully marked (keine, meine, meinen), so the adjective ends in -en in every case.
Das ist kein guter Plan.
That's not a good plan.
Unser neues Sofa ist bequem.
Our new sofa is comfortable.
Ich trage meine neuen Schuhe.
I'm wearing my new shoes.
plural: -en
