Prepositions with Dative

Seven small words that settle the case before you have even chosen the noun.

Prepositions that decide the case

English prepositions never change the noun after them: with the man, with him. In German, each preposition governs a case. After these seven, the noun and its article are always dative.

The rule in three sentences

Ich fahre mit dem Bus.

I take the bus.

der Bus → dem Bus

Sie wohnt bei ihrer Schwester.

She lives at her sister's place.

die Schwester → der Schwester

Ich spiele mit den Kindern.

I'm playing with the children.

die Kinder → den Kindern

In everyday sentences

Woher kommst du? — Aus Kanada.

Where are you from? — From Canada.

Wir treffen uns bei mir.

We'll meet at my place.

Nach der Arbeit gehe ich schwimmen.

After work I go swimming.

Sie ist seit Montag krank.

She's been ill since Monday.

Das ist ein Geschenk von meiner Mutter.

That's a present from my mother.

Ich gehe zu meiner Freundin.

I'm going to my friend's place.

Contractions

Three prepositions fuse with the masculine and neuter article dem, and zu also fuses with the feminine der. Use the short forms in speech and writing.

The feminine forms with von and bei stay in full: von der Nachbarin, bei der Firma. mit dem is never contracted.
