Simple Past: Strong Verbs

English has sing–sang, German has singen–sang. Many strong verbs are the same verbs, changing in the same direction.

The vowel does the work

Weak verbs add -te. Strong verbs change their stem vowel instead and add nothing: gehen → ging, kommen → kam, sehen → sah. You know the idea from English: come → came, drink → drank, see → saw.

Three you can almost guess

Er kam viel zu spät.

He came far too late.

kommen → kam, like come → came

Ich sah sie nur kurz.

I only saw her briefly.

Sie trank ihren Kaffee schwarz.

She drank her coffee black.

trinken → trank, like drink → drank

English is a good first guess, not proof. Some English verbs have turned weak where German kept the vowel change: help → helped, but helfen → half.

The endings

Strong verbs in the Präteritum

Persongehen → gingfinden → fandsprechen → sprach
ichgingfandsprach
dugingstfandestsprachst
er / sie / esgingfandsprach
wirgingenfandensprachen
ihrgingtfandetspracht
sie / Siegingenfandensprachen

ich and er/sie/es have no ending at all; the others take -st, -en, -t, -en.

A past stem ending in -d or -t takes a linking -e- before -st and -t: du fandest, ihr fandet.

Ich blieb noch eine Woche.

I stayed another week.

Du schriebst mir jeden Tag.

You wrote to me every day.

Wir gingen zu Fuß nach Hause.

We walked home.
