Prepositions with the Genitive

The prepositions of official letters, news and contracts: more formal than wegen and trotz, and always followed by a noun, never by a clause.

The formal members of the group

Besides wegen, trotz and während, German has a dozen more prepositions that take the Genitiv. Most of them belong to written language: you will read them constantly, and a few of them are worth using in your own formal writing.

dank and laut: Genitiv or Dativ

These two take the Genitiv in formal writing, but the Dativ is common and accepted. With a pronoun the Dativ is the only option, because there is no genitive form to use: dank dir. With laut, the Dativ is usual when an article is present, and with no article no case is visible at all: laut Gesetz.

Dank deiner Hilfe sind wir früher fertig geworden.

Thanks to your help we finished earlier.

Dank dir sind wir früher fertig geworden.

When the Genitiv cannot show itself

The Genitiv is visible on articles and adjective endings. When the noun has neither, as with a bare plural, a place name or a pronoun, German has three standard solutions.

von + Dativ

With a bare plural or a name, innerhalb, außerhalb and aufgrund take von: innerhalb von zwei Wochen, außerhalb von München, aufgrund von Fehlern.

Die Rechnung ist innerhalb von 14 Tagen zu bezahlen.

The invoice is to be paid within 14 days.

Sie wohnen außerhalb von München.

They live outside Munich.

The bare noun

Without an article the noun simply stands there: wegen Krankheit, wegen Bauarbeiten, laut Gesetz. This is normal on signs and in announcements.

Wegen Krankheit fällt der Kurs heute aus.

Today's class is cancelled due to illness.

Wegen Bauarbeiten ist die Straße gesperrt.

The road is closed because of construction work.

Pronouns: -wegen forms

After wegen, pronouns turn into compounds: meinetwegen, deinetwegen, seinetwegen, ihretwegen, unseretwegen. Spoken German often says wegen mir instead, which is casual.

Sie ist meinetwegen extra früher gekommen.

She came earlier especially for my sake.

Meinetwegen können wir auch später essen.

As far as I'm concerned we can eat later too.

meinetwegen on its own means fine by me
