Separable vs Inseparable Prefixes

One spelling, two verbs: with durch-, über-, um- and unter- the stress decides whether the prefix separates.

The stress decides

A stressed prefix separates: AUFstehen → Ich stehe auf. An unstressed prefix is fused to the verb and never separates: beKOMmen → Ich bekomme. Most prefixes always behave the same way. Four of them can do either.

Three kinds of prefix

Prefixes that go both ways

With durch-, über-, um- and unter- you get two different verbs with the same spelling. With the stress on the prefix the verb is separable, with the stress on the stem it is inseparable. Each pair has its own meanings, so learn the pairs one by one.
