Wissenschaftssprache: Abschwächung und Positionierung

Academic German: hedging and stance

English hedges with *may*, *suggest* and *appear*. German uses the Konjunktiv II, a graded set of verbs and an impersonal voice.

How strong is the evidence?

In academic writing, the verb that introduces a finding tells the reader how much you claim. Choose it to match your evidence. Overclaiming invites criticism; underclaiming makes a clear result look weak.

From strong to cautious

Erste Befunde deuten darauf hin, dass der Effekt bei Älteren stärker ist.

Tools for softening

Besides the verb, German softens a claim with the Konjunktiv II, with scheinen zu and with a small set of adverbs. One hedge per claim is usually enough.

dürfte: fairly confident, stronger than könnte.

It can be assumed that the figures will continue to rise.

Whose position is it?

A reader must always know who speaks: the research, another author, or you. German academic writing traditionally avoids ich and uses impersonal forms for its own thesis. Many fields now accept ich, but far less freely than English accepts I or we. The reporting verb also positions you: zeigt accepts the source, behauptet distances you from it.
