Zeitungsdeutsch: Schlagzeilen und Nominalketten

Newspaper German: headlines and noun chains

German headlines drop articles and auxiliaries like English ones, but they use a colon for quotes and soll for allegations.

The rules of shortening

A headline has to fit a narrow space and still be read in a second. Whatever the reader can fill in is dropped. English speakers will recognise much of this from their own press; the differences are the colon, soll and the length of the noun chains.

  • 1

    Articles drop

Ministerin weist Kritik zurück, not Die Ministerin weist die Kritik zurück.

  • 2

    Präsens for the past

Yesterday's event stands in the present. It makes the news feel immediate.

  • 3

    The auxiliary drops

A bare Partizip II stands for a completed passive: festgenommen means sind festgenommen worden.

  • 4

    Colon for a source

Name: statement means this person said it. The paper reports, it does not claim.

  • 5

    soll for plans and allegations

soll with an infinitive reports a plan or something others claim; with a perfect infinitive it means allegedly.

  • 6

    Question mark for the open

Kommt die Vier-Tage-Woche? signals speculation, not fact.

Noun chains

Headlines and teasers pack whole clauses into nouns, in two ways. Compounds put the main noun last: in Kita-Gebührenerhöhung the core is Erhöhung. Genitiv and prepositional chains put the main noun first: in Streit um Verlängerung der Mietpreisbremse the core is Streit. To decode, find the core, turn the nouns made from verbs back into verbs and add the people.

  • 1

    Find the core noun

Last part of a compound, first noun of a chain.

  • 2

Turn verb nouns back into verbs

Erhöhung → erhöhen, Verlängerung → verlängern.

  • 3

Add who acts and the missing words

Articles, the subject, a conjunction such as ob or dass.

Kita-Gebührenerhöhung sorgt für Ärger

Nursery fee rise sparks anger

Compound: core at the end.

Dass die Stadt die Gebühren für Kitas erhöht, sorgt für Ärger.

Chain: core at the start, no verb at all.
