A2Prepositions

Preposizioni articolate

Articulated Prepositions

When a preposition meets the, they fuse into one obligatory word: del, alla, nei, sullo.

One preposition, one article, one word

When one of the prepositions di, a, da, in or su is followed by a definite article (il, lo, la, l', i, gli, le), the two words fuse into a single word, the preposizione articolata. This is compulsory. di + il becomes del, a + la becomes alla. English has nothing like it: of the, to the and in the always stay two words.

The table

The form depends on the article the noun would take on its own: lo stadio becomes allo stadio, l'amico becomes dell'amico.
