Ella walks into a bakery with a very specific plan.

At the counter

Ella kauft Brot. Sie schaut auf die Uhr. Es ist sieben.

Ella buys bread. She looks at the clock. It is seven.

"Haben Sie schon Kuchen?"

"Do you have cake yet?"

"Nein. Es ist erst sieben."

"No. It's only seven."

"Dann nehme ich fünf Brötchen."

"Then I'll have five bread rolls."

"Für fünf Personen?"

"For five people?"

"Nein. Für mich. Ich warte auf den Kuchen."

"No. For me. I'm waiting for the cake."

Schon can mean already or yet. Erst can mean only.

Es ist erst sieben. Hast du schon Hunger?

It is only seven. Are you hungry already?

Good to know

Here, erst means earlier than expected. It can also mean first in a sequence.
