A picnic in Provence
Friends set a long table outside, overlooking the sea.

Il y a du pain, du fromage et un gros melon.
There is bread, cheese and a big melon.
« Qui a un couteau ? » demande Léa.
"Who has a knife?" asks Léa.
Personne. Il n’y a pas de couteau.
Nobody. There is no knife.
À la table d’à côté, un monsieur sourit. Il a un couteau.
At the next table, a man smiles. He has a knife.
« Voilà ! Et maintenant… il y a du melon pour moi ? »
"Here you go! Now... is there some melon for me?"
There is: il y a. There is no: il n’y a pas de.
Il y a du pain. Il n’y a pas de couteau.
There is bread. There is no knife.
Watch out
After il n’y a pas, use de for an unspecified amount or number.
