Reflexive Verbs

English drops the pronoun and says I'm looking forward to it. German keeps it, and the verb is wrong without it.

A verb with a pronoun

English uses myself only when it really means it: I hurt myself. German has many verbs where the pronoun is simply part of the verb. I'm looking forward to Friday has no pronoun in English, but ich freue mich needs one. Learn these verbs with their pronoun: sich freuen, not freuen.

Ich freue mich auf das Wochenende.

I'm looking forward to the weekend.

English has no pronoun here

Beeil dich, der Bus kommt!

Hurry up, the bus is coming!

Er wäscht sich jeden Morgen.

He washes every morning.

waschen also works without a pronoun: Er wäscht das Auto.

mich, dich, uns, euch are the accusative pronouns you know. Only sich is new.

sich covers he, she, it, they and the formal Sie. It is always lower case, even with Sie: Setzen Sie sich, bitte.

Where the pronoun stands

The pronoun stays close to the conjugated verb. If the subject comes behind the verb, the pronoun follows the subject. With a modal, it does not go to the end with the infinitive.
