Soften the verb
Please and a friendly voice are not enough in German. To ask for something politely, you put the verb into the Konjunktiv II, just as English moves from can to could.
The same request, three tones
Helfen Sie mir!
Help me!
An order.
Können Sie mir helfen?
Can you help me?
Neutral. Fine, but plain.
Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
Could you help me, please?
The usual polite form.
Four patterns for every day
Ich hätte gern … / Ich möchte …
To ask for something: food, a ticket, an appointment. Ich möchte can also take a verb: Ich möchte bitte zahlen.
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee, bitte.
I'd like a coffee, please.
Ich hätte gern einen Tisch für zwei.
I'd like a table for two.
Ich möchte bitte zahlen.
I'd like to pay, please.
Könnten Sie …? / Würden Sie …?
To ask someone to do something. The verb goes first, bitte inside the sentence, the infinitive at the end. With friends: Könntest du …?
Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen?
Could you repeat that, please?
Würden Sie bitte das Fenster schließen?
Would you close the window, please?
Könntest du mich morgen anrufen?
Could you call me tomorrow?
Dürfte ich …?
To ask permission for yourself. It is very polite and good for interrupting.
Dürfte ich Sie etwas fragen?
Might I ask you something?
Dürfte ich kurz stören?
May I interrupt for a moment?
Wäre das möglich?
To ask whether something can be arranged, or for a small favour. It is common in emails and at offices.
Wäre Donnerstag um zehn Uhr möglich?
Would Thursday at ten be possible?
Entschuldigung, wären Sie so nett?
Excuse me, would you be so kind?
Little words that soften
German speakers soften requests further with small words inside the sentence. They add tone, not meaning.
| Word | Effect | Example |
|---|---|---|
| bitte | basic politeness | Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? |
| vielleicht | leaves the other person a way out | Hätten Sie vielleicht einen Moment? |
| mal | makes the favour sound small | Könntest du mal kurz schauen? |
| zufällig | by any chance | Hätten Sie zufällig einen Kugelschreiber? |
