Real facts, hypothetical form
Ich hätte da eine Frage is not about an imaginary question. You do have one. The Konjunktiv II takes a statement that is perfectly true and presents it as if it were only a possibility. That small step back makes the statement less pushy: a claim becomes an offer, a criticism becomes a consideration.
Direct and distanced
Ich habe eine Frage.
I have a question.
neutral, a little abrupt as an opener
Ich hätte da eine Frage.
I was wondering if I could ask something.
the usual polite way in
Das ist so nicht richtig.
That's not right.
a flat correction
Das wäre so nicht ganz richtig.
I'm not sure that's quite right.
the same correction, with room to save face
English creates this distance mostly with the past tense and the progressive: I was wondering, I wanted to ask. German uses the mood instead, and keeps the present tense.
Four patterns for written argument
In reports, papers and formal emails the same distance lets you suggest, object and conclude without sounding categorical.
What each pattern does
| Pattern | Use | English |
|---|---|---|
| Es wäre zu + Infinitiv | an impersonal task or suggestion | it would need to be … |
| Man könnte + Infinitiv | an objection or an alternative | one could …, it might be … |
| dürfte + Infinitiv | a cautious assumption | is likely to, presumably |
| ließe sich, hieße, wäre | a tentative conclusion | it would seem, that would mean |
It would need to be checked whether the data is complete.
One might object that the sample is too small.
The effect is likely to be felt mainly in large cities.
From this one might conclude that the offer is too expensive.
I would be grateful if you could send me the documents by Friday.
In conversation
In meetings the same forms soften an opinion or a proposal. A suggestion as a negative question, Wäre es nicht …?, invites agreement without demanding it.
I'd say we wait another week.
Wouldn't it make more sense to ask the customers first?
Da hätte ich eine andere Idee.
I might have a different idea there.
