Konjunktiv II: hätte, wäre, könnte

Some verbs don't use würde. Their own forms are short, and you hear them in every other sentence.

Past tense plus umlaut

Germans hardly ever say Das würde schön sein or Ich würde Zeit haben. For sein, haben and the modal verbs, German uses a one-word form: Das wäre schön, Ich hätte Zeit. You build it from the simple past.

Ich hätte noch eine Frage.

I have one more question, if I may.

Hättest du morgen Zeit?

Would you have time tomorrow?

Es wäre schön, dich mal wiederzusehen.

It would be lovely to see you again sometime.

The modal verbs

Modal verbs in the Konjunktiv II

InfinitiveSimple pastKonjunktiv IIMeaning
könnenkonntekönntecould
müssenmusstemüsstewould have to, really ought to
dürfendurftedürftemight I; should be (an assumption)
sollensolltesollteshould
mögenmochtemöchtewould like

sollen gets no umlaut. Its Konjunktiv II looks like the simple past.

You know möchte from the beginning: it is the Konjunktiv II of mögen. That is why Ich möchte einen Kaffee sounds friendlier than Ich will einen Kaffee.

Könnten Sie mir kurz helfen?

Could you give me a hand for a second?

Du solltest mal zum Arzt gehen.

You should see a doctor.

Ich müsste eigentlich noch arbeiten.

I really ought to be working.

Das dürfte kein Problem sein.

That shouldn't be a problem.

A few more you will hear

A few other very common verbs also have a short form that Germans use all the time. You can always say würde plus the infinitive instead, but you should recognise these.

wüsstegäbekämegingefändebräuchte

Ich wüsste gern, warum.

I'd like to know why.

Ich bräuchte noch zehn Minuten.

I'd need ten more minutes.

Das ginge auch später.

That would work later too.

Wishes

A wish for something that is not true uses the Konjunktiv II with nur or doch. English needs I wish or if only.

Wenn ich nur mehr Zeit hätte!

If only I had more time!

Wärst du doch hier!

I wish you were here!

Without wenn, the verb comes first.

Ich wünschte, ich könnte mitkommen.

I wish I could come along.
